So my roommate floatingatoll spent a couple of hours yesterday trying to get an UPS working, it refused to charge and just went directly to battery.

After much faffing about, APC tells him to plug the UPS into a Windows box which has better diagnostics than the Mac client, and the UPS tells him that our voltage is 183V. Second UPS tells the same.

Quick call to PGE and they consider this an emergency and will send someone out at once.

This probably explains why X10 so did not work, thank good all the computer gear is rated 120-240.

Couple of weeks, actually.

APC technician indicates that the software is incorrectly reporting 183 volts, after I verified that the software shows the same value at my office (where we have an APC UPS that is *not* reporting 183 volts).

Re: Couple of weeks, actually.

So we have faulty APC units reporting 183 volts?

Does the APC unit work in the office?

Doesn't work anywhere.

It reports 183 volts with software 1.5 or 2.0. They're replacing the entire unit with a different model altogether, in the hopes that it will solve this problem.

Third UPS works precisely as expected.

APC decided that obviously the model of UPS they were sending me was incompatible with.. standard 120V/60Hz AC power. So, they sent me a newer model. It powered up when plugged in and works like a charm.

I still think I was making a mistake hooking up the first two, but neither APC nor I could identify any missteps. Oh well.
